Astronomical seasons are based on the position of Earth in relation to the sun. They begin on the solstices (longest and shortest days) and equinoxes (equal day and night). Spring begins on the vernal equinox (~March 20), Summer on the summer solstice (~June 21), Fall on the autumnal equinox (~September 23), and Winter on the winter solstice (~December 21).
